KDP Calls on Schmidt to Open Investigation

Topeka, KS – The Kansas City Star reported that Johnson County GOP Chair Fabian Shepard is facing allegations of sexual assault from an event he attended over the weekend. Top Kansas Republicans have remained silent, including Attorney General Derek Schmidt and former Chair of the Kansas Republican Party Amanda Adkins. In light of the news, the Kansas Democratic Party is calling on Schmidt, in his role as the state’s top law enforcement official, to open an investigation into Shepard’s behavior.

The KDP is also urging all Republican candidates for statewide office to weigh in on Shepard’s actions or risk complicity in his making the Kansas Republican party unsafe for women. In addition to Schmidt and Adkins, notably silent is Kris Kobach, perpetual candidate seeking higher office in Kansas — including his failed candidacy for governor and U.S. Senate — and current candidate for Attorney General.

The Kansas City Star’s editorial board called for an investigation into Shepard’s behavior, as have top Democratic and Republican leaders alike, including retired Kansas City police officer and GOP activist Duane Beth, who was at the scene the night of the incident, and Bonquay Bryant, chair of the Johnson County Young Republicans.

“As Kansas’ top prosecutor, Derek Schmidt has a duty to protect his constituents, even if it’s not politically convenient,” said KDP spokesperson Emma O’Brien. “While the Kansas GOP has chosen to sweep this incident under the rug, a true leader of the Republican party would step up and take action. Schmidt’s failure to do so is a troubling indication of how he would serve as governor. Schmidt’s continued silence is deafening, and he and others in leadership should demand an investigation to get to the bottom of what happened that night.”

“Amanda Adkins is both the former chair of the Kansas Republican Party and currently running to represent Johnson and Wyandotte counties. Her failure to speak out about these shocking allegations not only signals a failure in leadership, but that she’s not fit to lead Kansas’ Third District,” O’Brien added.
