KANSAS LEGISLATURE GAVELS IN FOR 2021 SESSION

What’s happening?

(WIBW) – Monday marked the return of lawmakers to the Kansas statehouse for the 2021 legislative session.

The new session marks new leadership in the Senate with Andover-area Republican Sen. Ty Masterson taking over the role of Senate President and McPherson Republican Sen. Rick Wilburn as Vice President.

Lenexa Democrat Sen. Dinah Sykes will serve as Senate Minority Leader, overtaking the role held by former Senator Anthony Hensley, who lost his race for reelection.

“It’s exciting, it’s like the first day of school…with new leadership comes new responsibilities, so looking forward to fitting into the role and adapting it to my own personality,” she said.

KANSAS REPUBLICANS LOOK TO OBSTRUCT GOVERNOR LAURA KELLY’S AGENDA WITH A FOCUS ON TAXES, ABORTION

What’s happening?

(Kansas City Star) – The Kansas Legislature will reconvene Monday for a session likely to be defined by two things: a more conservative membership and a still-raging, politically divisive COVID-19 pandemic.

Lawmakers’ first job will probably be to extend or amend the Kansas Emergency Management Act, which limits Gov. Laura Kelly’s power to manage the pandemic. Republicans will also renew their pursuit of tax cuts and a constitutional amendment allowing restrictions on abortion.

These measures fell short in the House of Representatives last year. But with the exit of some Democrats and moderate Republicans, unseated by more conservative lawmakers, GOP leaders say they see a clearer path forward.

KANSAS RAMPS UP COVID-19 VACCINATION REPORTING

What’s happening?

(KSN) – Governor Laura Kelly says Kansas is no longer in the bottom tier of states when it comes to distributing the coronavirus vaccine.

“Due to a significant improvement in reporting data, Kansas is in the top tier of states providing COVID-19 vaccinations,” Kelly said during an afternoon news conference. “In fact I just heard that we have moved up to 17th.”

The state vaccination website KansasVaccine.gov is reporting 93,885 doses have been administered in Kansas as of 8 a.m. KansasVaccine.gov also includes the state’s prioritization plan.

“When we expanded phase 2 to all Kansans over the age of 65, we were actually preempting the CDC,” Kelly said.

DONALD TRUMP TRUMP MAKES HISTORY AS ONLY POTUS TO BE IMPEACHED TWICE

What’s happening?

(New York Times) – Donald J. Trump on Wednesday became the first American president to be impeached twice, as 10 members of his party joined with Democrats in the House to charge him with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in egging on a violent mob that stormed the Capitol last week.

Reconvening in a building now heavily militarized against threats from pro-Trump activists and adorned with bunting for the inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., lawmakers voted 232 to 197 to approve a single impeachment article. It accused Mr. Trump of “inciting violence against the government of the United States” in his quest to overturn the election results, and called for him to be removed and disqualified from ever holding public office again.

The vote left another indelible stain on Mr. Trump’s presidency just a week before he is slated to leave office and laid bare the cracks running through the Republican Party. More members of his party voted to charge the president than in any other impeachment.

Onward,

KDP Team
