Topeka, KS — Yesterday, the Kansas Democratic Party called for Laura Tawater, newly elected Chair of the Ford County Republican Party who attended the riots at the Capitol last week and called for “patriots to take the country back from those who hijacked the election,” to resign, along with calling for the Kansas GOP to condemn her inflammatory rhetoric. Nearly 24 hours since, both Tawater and the Kansas Republican Party remain silent.
Additional posts on Tawater’s social media call for individuals to “get tough” and “NEVER SURRENDER our country.” Tawater also frequently promotes false claims propagated by the Kansas Republican Party and Representatives Tracey Mann, Jake LaTurner, Ron Estes, Senator Roger Marshall, and Attorney General Dereck Schmidt that the 2020 election was fraudulent.
In response, KDP Chair Vicki Hiatt issued the following statement:
“Make no mistake, the inflammatory language promoted by the Kansas Republican Party and its representatives encouraged the violent insurrection witnessed last week at the U.S. Capitol. As a Party leader, Tawater should resign, and the Kansas Republican Party should condemn this type of language across their delegation. Anything less continues to perpetuate violent, false claims and risk the safety of all Americans.”
