KDP Weekly Rundown #25

Friday, September 6, 2019

Welcome to the KDP Weekly Rundown – the Kansas Democratic Party’s update of the biggest things going on in the state party and the state government.

MEDICAID EXPANSION

  • What’s happening?

Governor Laura Kelly signed Executive Order 19-10 on Wednesday, establishing the Governor’s Council on Medicaid Expansion. The council will study the costs and benefits of expansion models in other states and serve as a transparent forum for public discussion; it will not develop new legislation. “When I traveled around the state last fall, Kansans made it clear that this is a high priority. They want as many Kansans as possible to have access to affordable, high-quality health care. They want our hospitals supported, and they want the jobs Medicaid expansion will bring,” Kelly said at a press conference. “Medicaid expansion isn’t just a matter of smart health care policy. It is smart fiscal policy. It is smart economic policy. It is smart public policy.” The council is tasked with identifying three to five goals for responsible Medicaid expansion in the state before the next legislative session.

DCF LAWSUIT

  • What’s happening?

Attorneys filed a motion to amend their ongoing class-action lawsuit against the Department for Children and Families, adding 4 additional foster children to the suit. They claim the children are still being bounced from placement to placement and are being deprived of mental health treatments. Department for Children and Families’ Laura Howard released a statement on Tuesday stating the agency is committed to improving the placement of children.
